I haven't updated much because, honestly, nothing much exciting has happened. Or rather, things happen, but they don't warrant a blogpost or I just haven't felt like blogging. Generally, the writing would suck and you would be bored and it would just be bad all around.
Another hard part about being an atty and blogging is that I can't really talk about work stuff. Sadly, that's the most interesting thing going on with me. Speaking in general terms, I'm on 2 deals at the moment. Life just got crazy. Right after Thanksgiving, one of my partners asked me to do what's called a "target profile" on one of the potential companies involved in our transaction. The partners use this as a company cheatsheet. Talking with other associates, they believed that partners ask for these things but then never look at them. Well. Yesterday I was in a strategy meeting with our clients (SO COOL to see the partners at work! -- I basically took verbatim notes). During that meeting, the partners flipped through and referenced my profile many times! It was actually used. As silly as it sounds, that was a gratifying moment. Also gratifying is that I turned that profile in 2 weeks ago and hadn't heard anything - so that means --> no edits! It was fine as is. :) Hooray for small victories.
Anyway, that deal is heating up. Now, I worked hard in law school. There were nights I got 4 hours of sleep and days where I was going the entire day. But that was different than this. This week from Monday morning on it was so busy. I would get in and then be going for the rest of the day until midnight or 2am (2 nights of each). So, I ended up billing 70+ hours so far this week, which means I actually worked more than that. Also, my senior associate works 2 floors above me and there's no elevator access so I hoof it up the 2 flights of stairs several times per day for meetings. However, today after I hoofed it up there with 20 lbs of binders and arrived sweating and out of breath (carpet-covered stairs in 3 1/2" heels and a big box = not fun) and then joked about not needing to go the gym, he FINALLY asked what floor I'm on. I told him and I think he felt a little bit bad. He'll probably forget but maybe I'll get out of running up and down stairs all day for a week.
Anyway, today I was on another call in the partner's office, and he asked me if I was having fun. I honestly answered "YES!" (Then he asked if I'm working enough now -- apparently me asking if BigLawNYC LLP has an academic writing policy sufficiently rose the red flag!) It's very cool and exciting to be working on this deal. Especially since the more I'm on it and the more I'm in these calls, the more I understand the work that I get given. Sure, it can be super boring reviewing other companies' merger agreements for precedent provisions BUT I now know what to focus on. And, like other deals for my firm, this will likely be in the news once it's done. I've worked on 2 things in the news so far and it's very satisfying to read other people's analysis of the transaction or situation. I have an immense sense of pride being at my current firm. And when it's 2am and I'm still at the office, I just tell myself that this is my dream job and I've worked very hard to get here. The end.
