As I've probably mentioned ad nauseum, I live on a very busy street—8th Avenue to be exact. The cool thing about living where I do is how close I live to everything. In fact, I live on the same street and the same few blocks as several very cool buildings.

Hearst Building |
The first is the Hearst Tower. If you are confused about the building to the left, you are not alone. It's a very modern meets art deco building. This is not your imagination. In 1926, William Randolph Hearst had commissioned a tower from Joseph Urban. (Ch. 182) Bad timing for him, the Great Crash of 1929 happened and all that was ever built was the first 6 stories. (Ch. 182) In 1988, the base was designated a NY landmark, which meant that in 2001 when Sir Norman Foster began to build the new Hearst Tower, he was stuck with the original base. (Ch. 182) The statues on the base represent Comedy, Tragedy, Printing (how fitting for Hearst), Music, Science, Art, Sport and Industry. (Ch. 182) Fun fact about Hearst, I was watching Project Runway and one of the designers was leaving this building and I could see MY building when she was getting in the cab! Soooo cool!

Just the art deco base. |

The Kissing Towers |
A few blocks up at Columbus Circle is the Time Warner Center. It was designed and built by David Childs (also of Freedom Tower fame) in 2004. (Ch. 182) The center hosts an upscale mall (actually, it's really really nice with commissioned artwork and everything. There was a Salvatore Dali exhibit a few months ago) as well as it's anchor tenant. It also hosts Per Se (on my list of 30 Before 30) and Whole Foods as well as a theater for Jazz at Lincoln Center. It's quite spectacular honestly.

From second floor balcony facing east out the crazy windows to
Columbus Circle and along the park on Central Park South. |

End of an era (I always like Barnes & Noble better anyway...) |

8th Ave. towards where I live and work. In the center of the frame
is what I affectionately call the "Eye of Sauron". It follows me everywhere... |
