We're Not in Illinois Anymore

Disembarking the plane was like walking into a sauna.  The humidity was palpable and made all of us instantly sticky.  Definitely not in Illinois anymore.  We got out planeside and I immediately felt like I was on vacation.  The single runway is both for landing and takeoffs and is surrounded by palm trees.  Upon arriving at the hotel, my roommate and I unpacked everything.  It is nice to be rooming with someone as anal as I am.  Since we are here for the week, it’s nice to have my “work” clothes hung up and my shorts and tees in drawers.  We did get teased from other trip participants especially because we were missing free drinks poolside to unpack.  I think that was fair.

After unpacking, I changed into one of the seven (I know, I know) sundresses I brought with me.  In fact, it was the dress that I wore for my Rehearsal Dinner—I’ve been jonesing to wear it again and this was a perfect excuse!  I mean, how often to you get to wear a white strapless sundress?

Mwambo and Brandon chillin' poolside

The food on the first night consisted of potato salad, local sausage, seafood pasta salad, jerk chicken (awesome), curry fish (which I was told to stay away from for mango avoidance purposes), and ribs.  It was surprisingly tasty.  The only sketchy thing was the reappearance of the potato salad and seafood pasta salad at breakfast on TUESDAY (we got here Sunday).  I felt a little bad for the other guests that didn’t know it was originally served OUTSIDE on Sunday night...  This made me skeptical of breakfast at the hotel; I’m now sticking to bagels and peanut butter).

This also reminds me of something else that is NOT sketchy – the water!  I need to take a picture of it on my way back onshore but there was an ad in the Cayman Airways magazine touting the drinkability of the water.  My favorite part of the ad was the note at the end plugging the water company’s stock for people tired of buying t-shirts as souvenirs.  Seems very “Cayman” despite the fact that I’m not sure what that means.  Description seems apt in my head.  Anyway, I’ve done some thinking about how convenient it is that the water is safe.  I seriously have been filling my water bottle with tap water, and it even tastes quite nice (not to mention no digestive/ bowel problems yet and we’re on Day 4).  We went to a beach on Wednesday (our day off) and they even had FREE water in coolers.  I just find that it would be such a good way to exploit tourists by only providing bottled water but I guess they are doing that in other ways, which will be clear in my other posts about the trip.
