Scavenger Hunt: Andy Warhol

Awhile ago, I wandered around the City and then SoHo.  Well, I came across this random statute of Andy Warhol in Union Square.  I, of course, took a picture.

After I was done taking the photo, this really rude man asked me if I knew who he was.  I had headphones on so I didn't hear him at first.  Like, why is this person talking to me?  I took my headphones out of my ears and the guy was seriously asking me if I knew who the statute was of in a sarcastic, you're a dumb tourist kind of way.  I rolled my eyes at him at walked away.  For one, the guy's name is written on the stupid statue.  And second, let's say I didn't know who it was, why is that a problem?

What I did not know was the backstory to this statue.  While looking around TimeOut NY to find things to do over Memorial Day weekend, this is what I found about it:

Rob Pruitt, The Andy Monument
Through Oct 2
Home to statues of George Washington and Mahatma Gandhi, Union Square makes room for this tribute to Andy Warhol, whose Factory was also located in the nabe between 1968 and 1984. Andy is shown in all his silver splendor, with his trusty Polaroid camera around his neck. Union Square, E 17th St at Broadway (212-223-7800, publicartfund.org). Subway: L, N, Q, R, 4, 5, 6 to 14th St–Union Sq.

I didn't want to post until I knew what it was.  Finding public art is definitely one of my new favorite things.  Hope you enjoy my new hobby too.
